Oni Hagi-yaki Yunomi Teacup
Yoshitoshi Mukuhara handcrafts each and every piece without distractions. He produces warm works of art that are both practical and beautiful.
You can see the brown clay through the fine white crackle glaze.
Each cup has the characteristic Hagi-ware cut foot at the base of these cups. This style of ceramic was originally brought over to Japan from Korea in the 1600s.The beauty of Hagiware lies in the softness of the soil and the quality of the clay.
This type of glaze style originated when Korean potters settled in Hagi, Yamaguchi prefecture, Japan. The white crackle style of Hagi ware known as Oni Hagi-yaki (demon glaze) was developed by the Miwa family, one of the most highly regarded potting families in Japan.
Hagi ware is absorbent and permeable due to the type of clay and glaze. When used the tea will soak into the cracks in the surface glaze, the is called crazing and changes the colour of the vessel. This characteristic change is known as "the seven seasons of Hagi"
