Biwa -iro Hagi-yaki Chawan
This matcha tea bowl has a yellow loquat colour glaze. The chawan has a characteristic hagi cut foot and comes in a wooden box signed by the potter.
The potter, Mr Setsuo Hara, is based in Yamaguchi Japan. Mr. Hara has been creating ceramics for over 35 years. He focuses on ceramics that fit easily in the hand with soft colours that are characteristic of Hagi.
One of the characteristics of the hagi-ware glaze is that there is a slight crackle on the surface. These crackles will become seasoned with use over time. This gradual change in colour is commonly referred to as “the seven transformations of Hagi” or “Hagi no nanabake”.
