Zenkouen  - Hojicha Powder

50g

A delicious powdered version of the very popular hojicha. This is an easy tea to make quickly and drink 100% of the tea.

Powdered hojicha is also perfect for creating lattes as well as for baking cakes, cookies, etc.

Steeping Notes: The amount of tea needed will depend on what you are using it for. When making drinks we recommend mixing ( or whisking like you would matcha ) with a small amount of water to create a paste before adding the main volume of water or milk.

  • Ingredients: Roasted green tea
  • Net weight: 40 grams
  • Note: Grown without the use of pesticides/synthetic fertilisers
  • Region: Shimada, Shizuoka

About the farmer:

Yoshimitsu Masuda spent the first part of his adult life working in a major farming cooperative where he learned firsthand about the danger of food additives and pesticides. Returning to the family tea farm in 1992 to learn tea making from his father and fellow tea farmers in Shimada, Shizuoka, he was deeply surprised at the number of pesticides used in tea farming.

Switching to organic farming was not an easy task; insects and disease plagued the first field he was given charge of, crop yield and leaf quality dropped, and he faced criticism from both family and other tea professionals. But he felt it was important to create a tea that was safe for his own family to drink first.

Today, built upon 25+ years of organic farming experience, Masuda-san produces tea that he is proud to call both safe and delicious and is passing his tea-making skills on to his children.

A Bold and Unique Hojicha with Deep, Smoky Notes

I recently tried this Hojicha dark roast green tea from Zenkouen Tea Garden, and it’s a fantastic choice for those who enjoy bold yet smooth flavors. The roasting process gives it deep, earthy notes, with hints that remind me of aged wood and even tobacco—in the best possible way. Despite being a roasted tea, it still maintains some of that characteristic green tea freshness, making it a well-balanced and complex drink. The color is quite dark, reflecting its rich depth of flavor.

I also appreciate that it’s grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers, ensuring a pure and natural taste. It works beautifully in lattes or even for baking, as the roasted profile adds a unique touch to different preparations.

If you’re looking for a light, floral green tea, this might not be for you. But if you love deep, toasty, and slightly smoky teas with a distinctive character, this Hojicha is definitely worth trying. Highly recommended!
